Classroom Activities

They named the pumpkin 'Todos' because in Spanish its 'everyone''s pumpkin. |

![]() My first activity with the students was making Alien Slime with shampoo, cornstarch, food colouring, googly eyes, and glitter! | ![]() We extended our activity by practicing to write letters with the slime. | ![]() After a disappointing day when some students were hitting others, we called in our Ojibwe teacher to facilitate a ceremonial smudging by burning sage and cleansing our mind and body from negative energy. | ![]() We started a brand new day with reading about all the excellent ways we can use our beautiful hands. ![]() We pasted pasta P's on purple and pink paper. Try saying that 5 times fast! | ![]() After a long restless day, we decided to whine down and listen to a story about different types of feelings. 'In My Heart' by Jo Witek (2014). | ![]() The character trait for November was Empathy! The students took their puppet friends and tried to identify and solve some social justice issues that their plush pals may be facing. We learned new words like 'starving', 'dehydration', 'homelessness', and 'hygiene'. | ![]() |
![]() Some of our friends took their plush pals to the drama centre where they prepared a delicious meal to cheer them up! We decided to create a homeless shelter/ soup kitchen. | ![]() Our class learned about how Malala used her magic pencil to stand up for what is right. We then took home our own colour-changing magic pencils to write down how we would want to change the world. 'Malala's Magic Pencil' by Malala Yousafzai (2017) | ![]() Using our own magic pencils, some students designed a place to help those experiencing homelessness. One student even referred to another book 'Don't Laugh At Me' (2002) to get an idea of who needs help. | ![]() While some of our architect students drew how they wanted to design our shelter, others wanted to do the construction work. |
![]() We sorted the materials we have to provide our plushie pals and began to build beds. | ![]() Our compassionate classmate is giving her plush pal a warm bath so they can have good hygiene. | ![]() We've placed our heartful solutions in our 'Happy Place Homeless Shelter'. | ![]() After reading a story about a father and son who are experiencing homelessness and sneak around an airport, the class went to design comfy homes for the family. We made homes from castles to tents! 'Fly Away Home' by Eve Bunting (2003). |
![]() We learned to read new sight words like 'go', 'to', and 'the' | ![]() After attending a workshop about trauma and emotional regulation, we introduced a new safe space to help us stay in the green zone! | ![]() We learned about different totem animals and the Seven Grandfather Teachings as we read 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Fox' by Danielle Daniel (2015). We then thought about which animal we are like and turned into them. | ![]() The students wanted to take the 'Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox' book and read it as a bedtime story to their shelter residents. |
![]() Continuing our empathy month, we read 'The Artist and Me' by Shane Peacock (2016), a story about how a town bullied an artist named Vincent Van Gogh. The students thought about how they would have wanted to cheer up Mr. Van Gogh. | ![]() Our student wishes that he could have cheered Vincent up by buying all of his marvelous paintings. | ![]() We learned that Van Gogh's paintings of sunflowers were seen as unusual so we wanted to show how flower paintings can be both unusual and beautiful. | ![]() We can't get enough of his paintings! |
![]() Thanks to 'Ada Twist Scientist' by Andrea Beaty (2016), we now know that anyone can be a scientist no matter how young! | ![]() We were helping Ada Twist to find different types of smells outside to figure out the source of that stink. We have a chart to identify what was a good smell and a bad smell. | ![]() After reading multiple books about peace, we brainstormed our own ideas of what peace means to us. | ![]() One day after lunch the students found mystery seeds. We made hypotheses of what will grow and began to plant them. We also found a worm in the soil and named it Sir Mii. And that's how we created Sir Mii's Home. |
![]() The students were excited to see the plant's growth, they began to record the early development of our mysterious plant. | ![]() We were inspired by Henri Matisse's collages and learned how to turn a perfect square into a lovely picture. ![]() | ![]() We learned about Vasya Kandinsky's power to paint the music and sounds he heard. We practiced our mindfulness and created abstract art using a technique called resist. We learned that Maya Angelou made art using her poetic words. | ![]() |

The school and the local Muslim organization hosts its monthly community dinner were families and friends join together to enjoy a delicious free meal.
