Mock Newsletter

As a part of a literacy project, I created a mock newsletter that described my intventive literacy program in a grade three

classroom. It includes the 4 sections of

literacy; reading, writing, communication and media. My goals for this newsletter were to build a strong home-school relationship and promote literacy learning for pleasure.

Vibe Arts' Program Plan:

Your Friendly Neighborhood Street Artist

As a part of an in-office project at Vibe Arts for Children and Youth, I have created a four week program plan surrounding urban street art. The purpose of this program is o spread awareness of the differences between vandalism and street art, the various types of street art and recognizing local street artists in their community. The target group of a third grade class will then have the opportunity to create their own street art as a part of a finishing piece to the program.

For one of my final Assessment in Programming assignments, I created an IEP/IPP based on my observations and results from the Brigance test. This IEP/IPP was created for my friend's 3rd grade cousin. The objectives that were created for him was based off of his strengths and ways to enrich his emerging skills.

"Science Teaching Orientation

Regarding the article Nature Sources and Development of Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Science Teaching (Magnusson, 1999), I have identified with two of the teaching orientations; Discovery and Project-based. My main teaching philosophy is to empower students in their own learning and development through exploration and discovery. The Discovery Orientation is having the learning environment student-centered and focuses on students’ interest and directs them to discovers concepts on their own (Magnusson, 1999). This resonates with my because I believe that if students can make a personal connection with a curricular concept, then they can retain the information for longer and can easily apply it to their daily lives. The Project-based Science orientation is a learning strategy to investigate around a specific topic through various activities as students gradually express their understanding of the topic (Magnusson, 1999). I believe that this is one of the more effective teaching strategies because as the teacher prompts students to investigate deeper in the topic, students can express their understandings in diverse forms. This also allows teachers to have an overview of a student’s work and analyze where the student shows the most strength and areas of improvement as the student submits their artifacts on the topic; this is beneficial for all types of learners. Since these two orientations focuses on student empowerment and emphasized the importance of exploration, I believe they complimented each other in terms of deducing my teacher identity."

Honey Hive Childcare Centre

During a History & Philosophy course, we gathered into groups and created our idealistic childcare centre and with it our goals and philosophies as educators, here is a paragraph from the assignment:

 "Values and Beliefs

We believe that children have the capability to construct their own knowledge through exploration and interaction with their environment and community. Children are competent and filled with potential and that is why the curriculum is based on their curiosities and their knowledge is expressed through their creativity. As early childhood educators, our goals in The Honey Hive Childcare Centre are; to utilise the natural environment as a third teacher enabling children to build on their creative and cognitive growth, to spread appreciation for the natural environment to the children, to provide a sense of unity within the children’s community, to ensure their freedom of discovery and expression, and to respect and value their rights."
